Most adult Muslims
had the chance to grow up in Muslim countries, in which they
encountered the values of Islam in a natural way because
their surroundings allowed it, whether by means of the
mosques, the media or the schools etc... They lived in a
culture where religion is omnipresent. However, for children
who were born in a western society like Gatineau, the
challenge is real and complex. They have to face up to the
influence of society, the school, the media, let alone the
complicated situation of the parents who are not yet well
settled, and who cannot afford time to take care of their
progeny. All these yield a difficult situation that impacts
their identity and faith; a situation these children did not
choose to live.
Therefore, it has
become a duty to create a space with which children can
identify as a distinguished symbol of their origins; a space
where they can learn and observe the beliefs and practices
of their elders within a social environment steeped in
Islamic values. Equally important, children should have a
school to learn how to read and write Arabic, the language
of the Holy Koran. Finally, our children
need an official center where they can
learn the authentic principles of Islam, and to be preserved
from all kinds of religious deviation and extremism.
